Job Description
This role is based within The Open University’s Digital Services team, which provides and supports all central University IT services. The Client Systems Team is responsible for the administration, management and support of managed endpoints and associated infrastructure across the University.
As a Desktop Technician, you will be responsible for configuring, installing, and deploying desktop technologies—including PCs, laptops, telephony, Apple Mac devices, mobile devices, and printers—for staff across the University. You will play an essential role in ensuring that IT assets are properly tracked, maintained, and supported throughout their lifecycle, enabling the University community to work effectively both on campus and remotely.
Main Responsibilities
- Receive and log IT assets into the Configuration Management Database (CMDB), ensuring records are accurate and complete.
- Maintain up-to-date asset information, providing a clear audit trail from initial creation to allocation.
- Respond to IT support requests, ensuring the correct system image is installed and equipment is deployed promptly.
- Manage swap-out devices and process equipment returns, wiping and rebuilding devices where necessary.
- Oversee “End of Life” equipment, ensuring assets are disposed of correctly.
- Request supplier quotes for non-warranty equipment, and log warranty calls with third-party suppliers when required.
- Install and repair parts where appropriate, ensuring accurate cost allocation.
- Adhere to University health and safety policies, ensuring a safe working environment.
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness in IT asset management.
- Provide high-quality technical support to staff across the University.
- Communicate technical information clearly to colleagues at all levels.
- Work both independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines.
Person Specification
Essential
- A computing-related qualification or proven IT support experience.
- Strong technical understanding of computer systems and hardware.
- Ability to explain technical information clearly to non-specialists.
- Experience resolving technical issues in a desktop environment.
- Team player with good interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Experience working in a Stores environment.
- Physically able to lift and distribute IT equipment such as laptops, desktops, and monitors.
- Experience in a Desktop Support environment.
- Knowledge of Procurement processes.
- Ability to liaise confidently with staff at all levels.
