Health, Safety and Departmental Safety Lead

Location: Central London (in partnership with a leading university)
Duration: 6 months (Full-time)
Start Date: Immediate / Late January 2026
Pay: £23.11 per hour PAYE / £31.34 per hour Umbrella

Pertemps are proud to be partnering with a prestigious London university to recruit an experienced and proactive Health and Safety Lead for a six-month assignment. This key role will take full ownership of safety operations across a multi-department faculty, ensuring compliance, driving assurance, and promoting a robust culture of workplace safety.
Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Governance: Lead Health and Safety management across all departments, advising senior stakeholders, monitoring compliance, and fostering a culture of accountability.
  • Compliance & Risk Control: Maintain comprehensive safety records, manage incident reporting and investigations, and ensure the faculty meets all statutory and audit requirements.
  • Training & Capability: Coordinate essential safety training and oversee networks of Fire Marshals, First Aiders, and DSE Assessors.
  • Risk Assessments & Inspections: Deliver statutory and general risk assessments, site inspections, and workplace audits to ensure operational safety standards are maintained.
  • Emergency Planning: Support the development and testing of emergency procedures and business continuity arrangements.
  • Facilities Safety: Work with estates and operations teams to maintain safe facilities, compliant equipment, and appropriate safety resources.
About You
  • NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent Health and Safety qualification (or working towards).
  • Proven experience leading Health and Safety across complex or multi-site environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK Health and Safety legislation and compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent communication, judgement, and influencing skills to embed best practice.
  • Prior experience within higher education or the public sector is desirable.
