Job Description
A specialist Pupil Referral Unit in Birmingham is seeking an experienced English Teacher to teach small classes of students with social, emotional, and mental health needs. This role is ideal for an English Teacher who is confident working with students who have faced significant barriers to education and who thrives in a setting where relationships, consistency, and structure are key.
As an English Teacher in this PRU, you will teach English to small groups of students, often working at varying ability levels, including up to GCSE. Students may present with challenging behaviour, anxiety, or disengagement from mainstream education, so strong classroom management, resilience, and empathy are essential. You will be supported by experienced teaching assistants and a strong pastoral team who work closely with teaching staff to ensure students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
Job role:
- Teaching English to small classes of students with SEMH needs
- Planning and delivering engaging, accessible English lessons up to GCSE
- Adapting teaching to meet individual learning needs and ability levels
- Managing behaviour effectively using a calm, consistent approach
- Working closely with teaching assistants and pastoral staff to support students
- Building positive relationships to re-engage students with learning
- Monitoring progress and contributing to individual support plans
- Teaching small class sizes with high levels of support
- Working in a structured PRU environment with a clear behaviour framework
- Support from an experienced leadership and pastoral team
