Job Description
Want a paid route into Educational Psychology with daily, hands-on impact?
Ready to help pupils with autism build calm routines, confidence and progress?
*** Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** Permanent – September 2026 start date
*** £23,000 - £25,000 starting salary
*** School based in the Ward of Selly Oak
*** Support young minds with Autism and similar SEN requirements
The Role:
You will join the inclusion team and support pupils with autism, so lessons feel predictable and achievable. Your day will start with a simple check-in, equipment scan and goal setting. In class you will reduce task load with visuals, first–then steps and clear models. You will prompt communication with supported language and AAC where used. You will run short interventions on social communication, reading fluency and number facts, then help pupils apply gains back in lessons. You will plan regulation through calm corners, movement breaks and quiet restart routines. You will keep concise notes, complete ABC records when needed and share next steps with the class teacher, SENCO and, where relevant, SALT or OT. Safeguarding and behaviour procedures are followed throughout.
The Candidate & Requirements:
You are steady, curious and practical. You notice what works, keep boundaries consistent and fade prompts as independence grows.
- Degree at 2:2 or above. Psychology preferred.
• Clear written notes and confident, simple spoken language.
• Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
• Strong interest in autism, communication strategies and pupil wellbeing.
• Experience supporting children or young people is desirable but not essential.
The School:
This Selly Oak setting has clear routines from arrival to home time and a well-mapped provision for pupils with autism. Teachers and TAs use shared visuals, ready-to-use task cards and calm restart scripts so support is consistent. There are small intervention spaces, a sensory-friendly room and tight links with SALT and OT. Reading has daily practice with matched texts. Maths is taught in small steps with frequent low-stakes checks. You will receive a thorough induction, weekly bite-size CPD on autism-friendly strategies, and coaching with precise, usable targets. Admin support is in place for consent, timetables and record keeping so you focus on pupils.
