Job Description

English Graduate Teaching Assistant

Could you help GCSE pupils move from scraping by to making real progress in English? Want a school-based role where your support actually sharpens writing, reading, and exam confidence before you move into teacher training?

*** English Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** £85 - £100 per day
*** September 2026 to July 2027
*** ‘Good’ school central Birmingham
*** 1:1 and small group academic support across KS4 English

The Role:
Support KS4 pupils in English through targeted 1:1 work and small-group intervention. You will focus on reading, comprehension, essay structure, analysis, revision, and exam preparation, while reinforcing learning from lessons and feeding back clearly to teachers on pupil progress. Teaching assistants commonly support teachers in the classroom, while secondary teachers also work with small groups and follow safeguarding procedures as part of daily school life.

The Candidate:
You are articulate, thoughtful, and able to explain ideas in a way pupils can actually follow. You want meaningful secondary experience, you enjoy helping students improve their confidence in English, and you are looking for a role that gives you a realistic foundation for a future in teaching. Secondary school teachers work with pupils aged 11 to 16, or up to 19 in schools with sixth forms, so this type of support role gives useful exposure to that setting.

Requirements
• Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
• Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
• Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
• Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
• Career Goals – A desire to train as a teacher and build a long-term career in education.

The School:
This ‘Good’ school in central Birmingham is a strong fit for a graduate who wants to do more than just hover at the side of a classroom pretending to be useful. You will join a secondary setting where intervention is taken seriously, staff work closely together, and English support is used to raise attainment in a practical, measurable way. GOV.UK’s enhanced DBS eligibility guidance was updated on 20 January 2026 and remains the core guidance for roles working with children.
