Job Description

Science Technician – Secondary School (Birmingham)

Key Details
  • Pay: £100 – £125 per day (depending on experience)
  • Contract: Full-time, term-time only
  • Location: Secondary School, Birmingham
  • Training: Health & Safety and CLEAPSS-trained (or willing to be trained)
  • Start date: Immediate / ASAP

The Role
We’re looking for a reliable and organised Science Technician to join a busy science department in a Birmingham secondary school on a full-time, term-time only basis. You’ll be responsible for preparing and maintaining equipment and materials for practical lessons, setting up laboratories, ensuring safe handling and storage of chemicals and equipment, supporting teachers during practical sessions, and carrying out routine maintenance and stock control. The role will be essential in keeping lab sessions running smoothly and safely — helping to deliver high-quality hands-on science learning across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The Candidate
  • Experience or aptitude for working in school labs or similar environments (science degree or A-level science a plus, but not essential — we welcome trainees).
  • Comfortable preparing apparatus, solutions, and lab materials, and carrying out basic maintenance and safety checks (COSHH, health & safety, waste disposal).
  • Organised, proactive, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Reliable, with good attention to detail and a commitment to supporting practical science teaching and student safety.
  • Available for immediate start and able to commit to full-time, term-time working.

The School
  • Competitive daily rate of £100-£125/day, reflecting the current market rates for science technicians in the West Midlands.
  • A full-time, term-time only position
  • A supportive science department, working with trained staff, who value the technician’s role in delivering safe, effective practical science lessons.
  • Training and opportunity to develop your technical skills, health & safety competency, and lab-management experience — helpful if you have ambitions in science education or lab work.

Due to the number of applications, only successful candidates will be contacted.
